How do you activate your network during covid?
Study after study has proven that social networks are critical to both landing a job and advancing in your career.
Networking is really all about meeting new people and developing strong, trusting relationships with them. It’s really not all that different from making friends.
If you are looking to make a transition, activating your network gives you quick access to varied job market information—such as who’s hiring, what salaries are offered at different firms, how long it takes to get promoted, and what skills are most marketable.
So, here’s the million-dollar question:
First, let’s talk about the type of networking that will be most effective during Covid.
(1) Connect with connectors. It is not necessary to have a large network, but a quality network. Identifying and connecting with people who are connected to multiple networks is key, especially when you are strapped for time.
(2) Strive for diversity. Connect with folks who have different experience and goals, which will expand your knowledge and contacts in career-enhancing ways. Moving beyond similar-minded and experienced people to diversify your network and inner circle is critical.
(3) Embrace randomness. Most people find new opportunities through personal connections, but those contacts are often distant acquaintances. Pragmatically, new opportunities come from folks outside our daily routine – often called “weak-tie contacts.”
Now, let’s talk about some effective socially distant networking ideas:
(1) Use LinkedIn to connect with folks by writing articles, posting original content, sharing articles, and interacting with colleagues, industry leaders, and thought leaders.
(2) Schedule “walk and talk” time with a contact so you can build your relationship while you both get a little exercise + Vitamin D.
(3) Curate a virtual coffee or happy hour with a small and diverse group of contacts. Make sure that the group shares some similarity – like motherhood – so it’s easier to connect.
(4) Just check in. Everyday, reach out to 3 people in your network by text, email, or DM. Jot a quick note reminding them of a special memory, sharing an article they might enjoy, or thanking them for supporting your career.
(5) Plan a socially distant activity. Invite some prospects to do yoga in the park or have a picnic at the botanical gardens. Staying at least six feet apart, gather together to share stories, breathe, and enjoy each other’s company.
