1. Think Strategically, Not Tactically
As a new executive, it’s essential to expand your horizon beyond daily operations and focus on the broader, long-term vision. It’s easy to get caught up in daily emergencies that are constantly vying for your attention. It is harder to lift out of the details and set the strategic priorities that will drive your organization forward. Instead of diving into the details, you must consider how each decision aligns with the company's mission, vision and future objectives.
I am currently coaching a CFO who achieved that title by being really good at getting things done. But he is really struggling in his executive role because his success is no longer measured by the amount of work he gets done in a day but by his ability to deliver on the company's strategic plan. This new role requires that he analyze other players in the market to strengthen the company's position, develop a profitability model and build complex financial forecasts that align with the board's strategic plan.
This kind of adjustment in focus can be challenging at first if, for most of your career, you were driven by personal growth and the dangling carrot of advancement. Measurable success now hinges on how adept you are at prioritizing strategic initiatives that benefit the organization over task-oriented achievements.
By shifting your focus to the horizon, you allow others the space to be successful and you ensure that the organization stays on course to meet or exceed its goals.
2. Elevate Others, Not Yourself
I recently coached a heart-led female leader who had a hard time unlearning her desire to prove her individual skills and stand out. Being the only woman at the leadership table, she felt the need to continuously prove her right to be there. But she needed to shift her focus to empowering her team to excel. Once she gave her team clarity around job function, clear and measurable performance targets and recognition of their wins, it became clear to the other executives exactly why she deserved a seat at the table. By leaning into her natural strengths and developing the talent on her team into elevated roles, she started to subtly shift the culture of the company.
In the C-suite, you can accelerate the arc of others’ careers through sponsorship. The value of sponsorship is clear: Male employees with sponsors are 23% more likely to reach senior roles, and females 19%, illustrating the integral role leaders have in enabling career advancement. It’s no longer about demonstrating what you can do but rather about enabling others to reach their full potential. Celebrate their achievements, invest in their development and create an environment where they feel supported and valued.
Thus, entering the C-suite doesn’t mean abandoning your ambitions. You are only grounding your career aspirations in the organization’s success instead of your own, with the understanding that effective leadership and team achievements now will drive your career forward.
3. Drive Innovation, Not Compliance
As a former Big Law litigator, I often coach attorneys who have moved to the business side and been elevated to the C-suite.
I previously coached an attorney-turned-COO whose biggest challenge was to embrace innovation. He was spending all of his efforts mitigating risk—ensuring his company followed existing regulations and implementing internal policies—so he didn't have any bandwidth (or political capital) left to drive growth. His focus on maintaining the status quo was safe, but it was not transformational.
In today’s business environment, organizations can’t afford to be stagnant. My client needed to think beyond the status quo to what was possible for this organization. Ultimately, following our work together, he was able to set ambitious goals that inspired creativity; support strategic risk-taking, create a safe space where failure was seen as a learning opportunity rather than a setback and practice resilience and perseverance.
Ultimately, this mindset shift empowered his team to find innovative solutions, stay agile in the face of change and consistently push the organization forward.
Final Thoughts
By adopting these three mindset shifts, you can navigate your new executive role with confidence and effectiveness. The transition to the C-suite calls for a new level of vision, humility and openness to change. Embrace these shifts, and you’ll be well-positioned to lead your organization toward a future marked by strategic growth, high-performing teams and transformational innovation.
